Exodus 17: Water and War: God's Power in Provision and Protection

“Even in dry places and battles, God is present and powerful”

Aim:

To show how God sustains His people both physically and spiritually, even amid trials and warfare.

God’s Attributes:

  • Provider – He gives water in the desert (v.6)

  • Protector – He grants victory over enemies (v.11-13)

  • Faithful – He responds even to our complaints

  • Commander – He leads Israel through Moses and Joshua

Facts:

  • Israel complains due to lack of water at Rephidim

  • God tells Moses to strike the rock at Horeb; water flows

  • Amalek attacks Israel; Moses, Aaron, and Hur play key roles in victory

  • God commands Moses to write the victory down and declares war against Amalek

Three Ps:

  • Promise: God’s ongoing provision and protection

  • Principle: Spiritual battles are won through obedience and intercession

  • Prophecy: God declares He will blot out Amalek’s memory (v.14)

Insights:

  • Provision often comes through obedience, even when God’s instructions seem strange

  • Victory is linked to persistent prayer and partnership (Moses’ raised hands)

  • Spiritual leadership is both physical and intercessory

  • God's memory is long—He remembers both faithfulness and enmity

Application:

  • Trust God to provide even in spiritually dry seasons

  • Engage in prayer and support others in their spiritual battles

  • Be sensitive to God's methods, even when they defy logic

Deed:

Support someone in your life who is weary in battle—be an “Aaron” or “Hur” for them today.

Prayer:

Lord, You are my rock and my banner. In dry places, You refresh me; in battles, You give me victory. Help me trust Your provision and lift up others in prayer as we journey together. Amen.
