Exodus 5: Confronting Pharaoh: Obedience in the Face of Opposition

“God's promises often come with resistance before fulfillment.”

Aim: To understand that obedience to God doesn't always lead to immediate results but calls for faith, patience, and perseverance.

God’s Attributes in Exodus 5

  • Sovereign – God remains in control even when Pharaoh resists.

  • Patient – He allows a process to unfold that reveals His power.

  • Faithful – He doesn’t abandon His people despite hardship.

Facts:

  • Moses and Aaron approach Pharaoh to request freedom for Israel.

  • Pharaoh responds by increasing the Israelites' labor.

  • The people blame Moses, and Moses questions God.

  • God reassures Moses that He will act.

Three Ps:

  • Promise – God promises deliverance, but it doesn't happen immediately.

  • Principle – Obedience does not always bring immediate reward—it may be tested.

  • Prophecy – The unfolding of Pharaoh’s resistance foreshadows God’s mighty acts to come.

Insights:

  • God allows resistance to show His glory.

  • Opposition doesn’t mean failure—it may be part of God’s plan.

  • Leadership can be lonely and misunderstood, but God sees and knows.

Application:

  • Stay faithful even when results delay.

  • Don't equate resistance with God's absence.

  • Encourage others who are discouraged in their obedience journey.

Deed:

Reach out to someone who is discouraged in their calling. Offer a word of encouragement or pray with them.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to trust You when things don’t go as expected. Strengthen my faith in Your promises, and give me courage to obey, even when the journey is tough. Amen.
