Exodus 3: The Burning Call: Encountering Yahweh at the Bush

"God calls us in the ordinary to fulfill His extraordinary purposes."

Aim:

To explore how God reveals His identity, calling, and power, inviting us into partnership with Him.

God’s Attributes:

  • Self‑Existent (I AM): God reveals His name, “I AM WHO I AM” (v.14).

  • Compassionate Deliverer: He hears the cry of His people and comes down to rescue them (v.7‑8).

  • Holy: He is set apart, and His presence is sacred (v.5).

Facts:

  1. Moses shepherds his father‑in‑law’s flock at Mount Horeb.

  2. He sees a bush burning yet not consumed (v.2).

  3. God calls Moses by name and commissions him to rescue Israel (v.4‑10).

  4. Moses questions his own adequacy; God assures His presence (v.11‑17).

  5. God reveals His covenant name, “I AM” (v.14).

The Three Ps:

  • Promises: God’s promise to deliver Israel and bring them to the Promised Land (v.8).

  • Principles: God’s calling often begins in humble service—in the wilderness and in obscurity.

  • Prophecies: Moses will lead Israel out, and they will worship God on this mountain (v.12).

Insights:

  • God calls us from ordinary tasks into extraordinary mission.

  • Our doubts are met with God’s assurances—His presence is the key.

  • Knowing God’s name deepens our trust and reverence.

Application:

  • Listen for God’s voice in your everyday routines.

  • Step forward in obedience, trusting His presence over your abilities.

  • Meditate on “I AM” as a reminder of God’s unchanging nature.

Deed:

Identify one area where you’ve felt unqualified. Pray God’s “I AM” promise over it and take one step of faith this week.

Prayer:

Holy God, You are the I AM—eternal, faithful, and holy. Help me hear Your call in the mundane and step forward in courage. May Your presence transform my doubts into obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
