Gen20:~God's Protection Despite Our Failures
Genesis 20: God's Protection Despite Our Failures
"For the Lord had kept all the women in Abimelek’s household from conceiving because of Abraham’s wife Sarah." — Genesis 20:18
Aim
To understand God’s faithfulness in protecting His promises despite human failures and to trust Him to guide us through our mistakes.
God’s Attributes in Genesis 20
- Faithful – God protects Sarah to fulfill His covenant with Abraham.
- Just – He warns Abimelek and prevents him from sinning (Genesis 20:3-6).
- Merciful – God allows Abimelek to repent and be restored.
- Sovereign – He controls the circumstances to fulfill His promises.
Facts
- Abraham, fearing for his life, tells King Abimelek of Gerar that Sarah is his sister (Genesis 20:2).
- Abimelek takes Sarah into his household but does not sleep with her because God intervenes (Genesis 20:3-4).
- God warns Abimelek in a dream that Sarah is Abraham’s wife and that he would die if he touches her (Genesis 20:3-6).
- Abimelek confronts Abraham, who admits he misled him out of fear (Genesis 20:9-13).
- Abimelek restores Sarah to Abraham and blesses him with livestock and land (Genesis 20:14-16).
- Abraham prays for Abimelek, and God heals his household, allowing them to bear children again (Genesis 20:17-18).
Insights
- Fear can lead to poor decisions. Abraham’s fear caused him to deceive, but God still protected His promise.
- God intervenes to prevent sin. He stopped Abimelek from committing an act that would have hindered His covenant.
- Honesty strengthens relationships. Abraham’s deception put others at risk—truthfulness is essential in our walk with God and others.
- God remains faithful even when we fail. He did not abandon Abraham despite his lack of trust.
Application
- Trust God instead of acting out of fear. He is in control of every situation.
- Be truthful in your dealings with others. Honesty reflects God’s character.
- Pray for restoration. Like Abraham interceded for Abimelek, pray for healing and reconciliation in broken situations.
- Acknowledge God’s protection. Even when we make mistakes, He watches over us.
Deed
- Confess any fears that cause you to compromise your faith.
- Apologize to someone if you have been dishonest or misleading.
- Pray for God’s protection and wisdom in difficult situations.
Prayer
"Lord, forgive me when I act out of fear instead of trusting You. Help me to walk in honesty and rely on Your faithfulness. Thank You for protecting me even when I fail. Amen."
